MUST READ, IMPORTANT TIPS

Tired of translating the 'legalese' in your policy? We've highlighted some of the most common stumbling blocks under each major section of your policy.

Please note: This document does not take the place of your policy wording or policy schedule but will go a long way to clarifying some of the obscure legal terminology and ensuring your peace of mind.

Q: What's the sum of it? A: Your Buildings sum insured should reflect the current cost of rebuilding your home, not what you could sell it for. This includes all fixtures and fittings, walls, fencing, paving, pools, gate/borehole/pool/garage motors, sprinkler systems, garage, tennis court, geyser, solar panels, satellite dish, etc.

Q: What's non-standard? A: Non-standard buildings such as those including a thatched lapa. Any thatch fixture or wooden shed etc. may be seen by the insurers as a risk-altering structure. If your home has a lapa or wooden shed, please bring this 'fact' up during your renewal discussion, as we need to advise the insurance company.
  • A good rule of thumb: Your contents sum insured is made up of the 'new for old' replacement value of everything you would take with you if you moved home. Don't forget items such as linen, curtaining, clothing, special items (antiques and collections), garage contents and work sheds. We suggest using a calculator - take half an hour to walk from room to room adding up the cost to replace the contents in each room. Try not to underestimate replacement value, rather go a little higher to be safe.
  • Correct details: We need to know that all of your information is correct in order to give you the best possible cover. Please let us know if any of your details change or if you move home, so that we can ensure your cover remains unaffected. Please ensure that the correct physical address is stated on the policy. Household Content cover will not apply if you have not advised us of a change in address.
  • Alarm warranties: If you have an armed response linked alarm discount on your policy it means the alarm must be proven to have been activated and maintained if you are burgled when not at home. In instances where someone is home, signs of forcible or violent entry are required for a claim to be valid.
  • Locked safe clause: Any one item of jewellery over the value of R25 000 must be locked away in a locked safe unless you are wearing it. This is an important clause; make sure these items of jewellery are not kept on your vanity table.
  • Minimum security requirements: The general rule is that all external doors require security gates and all opening windows require burglar bars. If this is not the case a burglary claim could be rejected. This rule may vary depending on the level of existing security. For example, you live in a security complex, walled and/or access-controlled suburb, a particularly low-risk area or have received special terms, noted in writing on your policy schedule - specifically saying that the condition is not applicable.
  • Special items: If you have anything out of the ordinary, for example, an expensive patio/garden set, an expensive suit, a fur coat, Persian carpets, valuable paintings, wine collections or heirlooms, let us note these on your policy now to avoid problems at claim time.
  • Home office: Generally household contents policies do not cover items used to generate income. However, some policies do provide limited cover for home offices. Please raise this question during your renewal discussion.
Please ensure that the correct physical address is stated on the policy. Household Contents cover will not apply if you have not advised us of a change in address.
If you have a high net worth policy the rules below are different, please call us to discuss.

These are items that leave the home and this section is divided into two sections: unspecified and specified.

Unspecified All-risks

Personal effects and wearing apparel - items like handbags, gym bags, school bags, travelling luggage etc. Any one claim under this section may not exceed the total sum insured (refer to your schedule) and no single item within the claim may exceed 25% of the total sum insured.

The following items are not covered under the Unspecified All-risks section of the policy and must be added to the

Specified All-risks section:
  • Items used for business or professional purposes
  • Laptops/notebooks/palmtops/tablets/iPads/other smart phones/portable computers
  • Cellular phones,
  • Portable music players (IPods and MP3 players),
  • As well as other electronic data storage and processing equipment
  • GPS
  • CD disks,
  • Pedal cycles,
  • Money,
  • Documentation
  • Stamp or coin collections,
  • The contents of caravans,
  • Camping equipment,
  • Golf clubs
  • Pedal cycles
  • Contact lenses
  • Firearms.
Specified All-risks

Specific items not covered under unspecified All-risks but do leave the home.

Please remember, unless you have reasonable proof of ownership and replacement value of your specified items, the Insurance Company has the right to reject your claim. As a result it is important for you to keep your purchase invoices and packaging etc. Dont forget to bring this subject up during your renewal discussion.

Jewellery

Please ensure you have updated valuation certificates for all jewelry. Make sure this certificate values your jewelry at WHOLESALE replacement prices. The Insurance Company will assess your loss based on what it will cost them to remake the piece of jewelry, not the price at which a jeweler may value the piece. Often the difference is significant. If you need any more information, please raise the issue during your renewal discussion.

Please note: If you have a high net worth policy the Unspecified and Specified rules above are different, please call us to discuss.
If you have any non-standard extras fitted to your vehicle - for example alloy wheels or a sunroof etc. - you must inform us so we can increase the sum insured to include the additional value.

Additional Cover - at an additional cost you do have an option to:

  • Reduce your basic motor excess to zero.
  • Include car hire cover in the event of a claim (most clients already enjoy this cover).
  • Insure against tyre damage from things like potholes and glass etc.
  • Scratch & dents insurance - minor scratches and dents that fall within your excess.
  • Please discuss the above items with your broker.
Tracking Device - If you have a tracking device installed please take the time to check that it is in good working order. Over time batteries die out and not all tracking companies notify you when your system is not working properly.
Music lovers - If you are a lover of music and have a non-standard factory-fitted sound system in your vehicle you should add it to the specified all risks section of your policy. Don't forget that CD's left in your vehicle should be specified under All-risks.
Vehicle use - We all use our cars for different reasons, like the school runs, shopping trips or client meetings. What you use your car for will tell you what kind of cover you need.

  • Private use: Social, domestic pleasure including to and from work.
  • Business use: Social, domestic pleasure including to and from work and visiting of clients but not including delivering of business goods.
  • Commercial use: This cover is not available under a personal lines policy and includes vehicle being used to carry or deliver business goods (should be insured on a business/commercial policy).
Don't forget to check that your vehicle is insured for the correct usage.
